Punjabi Chola Recipe

Punjabi Chola  or Punjabi Chana is very popular Punjabi dish, The main ingredient to add rich taste in Chole are  onion, tomato along with ginger, garlic, and green chillies. The  Punjabi Chole/Chana is mostly served with Naan, Batura or Jeera Rice.

  • Cooking time – 30 mins
  • Serve person – 4


Ingredients Quantity
Chola 500 gram
Chopped onion puree 2 Pieces
Chopped tomato puree 2 Pieces
Ginger paste ½ Tablespoon
Garlic paste ½ Tablespoon
 Jeera /cumin seeds 1 Tablespoon
Coriander powder 1 Tablespoon
Red chilli powder ½ Tablespoon
Salt   As per taste
Garam masala 1 Tablespoon
Chopped green coriander To garnish

Recipe method

Step 1 – Soak Chola in a bowl for 5-6 hours in lukewarm water. Once soaked, wash Chola in fresh water. 


Step 2 – Take a pressure and put into Chola for boiling, Add 5 cups of water and salt to boil in the pressure cooker for 15 mins (8- 10 Pressure Cooker Whistles).


Step 3 – Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and Rai/mustard Seeds until crackles and turns glossy.


Step 4 –  Add Ginger + Garlic paste and saute for 1 mins

Step 5 – Add Onion Puree and sauté until turns light brown.  



Step 6 – Add Tomato puree and mix again, saute for 3-4 minutes.



Step 7 – Now add Turmeric powder + Coriander powder + Red Chilli powder + Garam masala and saute for 2-3 minutes.


Step 8  Then add boil Chola and mix well.  Add 1 cup water and salt and stir to mix.


Punjabi Chola masala is ready, Garnish it with the green coriander leaves and serve it with Naan, Batura or Jeera Rice.
