Rajma Masala Recipe

Rajma Masala is the dish loved by everyone on special occasions all over in India. I get the special request from my Son almost every week and we have it in our home. Rajma is a popular North Indian dish. There are two types of Rajma’s available in the market, A dark colour Rajma and light colour Rajma, I love to make light colour Rajma, you might be thinking why? I do not have any answer for this, you can try any one of them with the same recipe as detailed below.

Cooking time – 30 mins

Serve person- 4

 Ingredients

S. No Ingredients Quantity
1 Soaked rajma /kidney beans 2 Cups
2 Chopped onion puree 2 Pieces
3 Chopped tomato puree 2 Pieces
4 Ginger paste ½ Tablespoon
5 Garlic paste ½ Tablespoon
6  Jeera /cumin seeds 1 Tablespoon
7 Coriander powder 1 Tablespoon
8 Red chilli powder ½ Tablespoon
9 Salt to taste
10 Garam masala 1 Tablespoon
11 Chopped green coriander To garnish

Recipe method

Step 1 – Soak Rajma for 6-8 hours.

Step 2 – Once Soaked, Drain Rajma beans and wash in fresh water to put into a pressure cooker for boiling.

 Step 3 – Add 5 cups of water and salt to boil in the pressure cooker for 15 mins (8- 10 Pressure Cooker Whistles).

Note : If you have not soaked Rajma and still want to prepare, you can just put Rajma in Pressure cooker with water and 1/2 spoon baking soda to boil them – Put them on a medium flame for 20 mins (8- 10 Pressure Cooker Whistles).

Step 4 – Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds until crackles and turns glossy.

Step 5 – Add Onion and sauté until turns light brown.

Step 6 – Add Ginger – Garlic paste and sauté for 2 minutes. Add coriander powder, Red chilli powder and mix well.

Step 4 – Now add Tomato puree and mix again. Sauté for 3-4 minutes.

Step 5  Then add rajma beans and mix well. Add 1 cup water and salt and stir to mix.

Step 6 – Mash the beans a bit and stir again. Add garam masala powder and mix and cook for 5-7 minutes.

Rajma masala is ready, Garnish it with the green coriander leaves and serve it with Rice
